FAIRTRADE CELEBRATIONS

Lancashire, Morecambe and District has come of age, celebrating its 21st Birthday of

becoming a Fairtrade District on March 5th having maintained its status throughout. A coffee

morning was held at the Cornerstone and all who popped in enjoyed free drinks and

refreshments including Birthday cake. There were also stalls and other activities.

Bruce Crowther with the help of a ‘Fairtrade Banana’, Elsa, cut the cake.

Bruce is the founder of the ’Fairtrade Towns’ initiative which began in Garstang and has now spread throughout the world. Garstang became the First Fairtrade Town in 2001 and, not to be outdone, Lancaster, Morecambe and District became the first Fairtrade District in 2004.

We would like to thank all who support Fairtrade throughout the district by selling or buying the many different products. Fairtrade with their commercial partners and farmer networks across the world tackle some of the biggest challenges that farmers face today. They include child labour, climate change and women’s rights. By choosing Fairtrade, you know farmers and plantation workers get a better deal. You’re  choosing to be part of the solution.
